Founded in 1997 by Kim Taek-jin, NCSoft Corporation is a leading South Korean video game developer and publisher headquartered in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do. The company gained prominence with the release of its first MMORPG, Lineage, in 1998, which achieved significant success in South Korea and Taiwan. This success facilitated NCSoft’s expansion into international markets, establishing subsidiaries in North America, Europe, Japan, and Taiwan. Over the years, NCSoft has developed and published several acclaimed titles, including Lineage II, Aion, Blade & Soul, and the Guild Wars series. The company has also ventured into mobile gaming and formed strategic partnerships, such as the joint venture with Vietnam’s VNG in 2024, to strengthen its presence in the Southeast Asian market. In 2023, NCSoft’s commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices was recognized when it became the first Korean game company listed on the DJSI Asia Pacific Index. Despite its successes, NCSoft has faced challenges, including controversies over game monetization strategies, as evidenced by the launch of Aion 2 in 2025, which led to public backlash and a significant drop in the company’s stock price. Nevertheless, NCSoft continues to be a major player in the global gaming industry, known for its innovative game development and expansive portfolio.
